slide show

Some students should profit more from their practice time. I suggest that they embrace what enables progress. REPETITION. I must add that the right attitude about difficult music and remaining focused (yes, it's a choice) rather than being distracted by every idle thought will go a long way in attaining the technique and progress you desire.

Remember, excellence doesn't come easily or everyone would be a great guitarist.

The folks at Epiphone have a great hollow body to which I'd like to draw your attention this week. You jazz cats and blues players may like the sweet and sometimes tortured, soulful sound this lovely instrument can create (with the help of a competent guitarist.) Epi has done an excellent thing by posting a sound file of the Swingster Emperor to help you experience this fine axe. Check out

question

The Question of the week is:

Why is my guitar making that strange sound around the 7th fret?

Ugh! YOU WEREN'T USING YOUR HUMIDIFIER OVER THE WINTER!!!!

Okay, it's not irretrievable but it isn't good. The wood of your guitar is dehydrated and has shrunken because it has been in much too dry an environment. Here's what you need to do:

OPTION 1: Soak/wet your humidifier according to the manufacturer's instructions, and when it is in the correct condition, place it in your guitar and close the case. If you don't have a case, get out some large bowls and or roasting pans. Put them somewhere they won't be disturbed, NEAR THE GUITAR, then pour water into them (so you don't have to carry sloshy, heavy water from the sink). Be sure you replace the water as it evaporates.

OPTION 2: In addition to using your humidifier, if you have enough space and a large piece of plastic sheeting, make a little tent over your exposed guitar (in a music stand) and have the water vessels mentioned above, inside this little tent. Only remove your guitar to play and then replace it.

OPTION 3: In addition to using your humidifier, if you have a stable, large area in the bathroom, be sure to put your guitar in the bathroom whenever you or anyone else showers or takes a bath. BE SURE TO REMOVE IT BEFORE ANYONE USES ANY KIND OF SPRAY (hair, perfume, deodorant, room freshener etc.) It will be like a little mini sauna and much needed drink for the wood.

If your guitar is in really dried out condition you may want to take it to a GOOD guitar repair shop for intensive humidifying.

Now, keep that guitar humidified!!!

HO-HO-KUS, NJ

We're 3 months into 2010 and heading into spring. How about springing into learning a new instrument or making your guitar playing better than it's ever been? Sounds good to me.

If you are an intermediate or advanced guitarist, this March you can begin to turn your playing around. Stop working so hard only to sound like an amateur. Yes, you have to work at becoming a better guitarist, so make your effort profitable. Get more serious and better results with your music under the instruction of a competent teacher.

I possess decades of experience instructing beginners through advanced players as well assisting my students with audition preparation. Don't miss this opportunity to learn to play guitar from a highly experienced, effective instructor. Although I don't have a lot of time available, our schedules might coordinate, so contact me.

Don't Let "Technique" or "Tutor" scare you.

(The domain names I wanted were all taken so www.guitartechniquetutor.com was the best I could do to suggest superior and effective guitar instruction.)

The truth is, if you lack strength and do not have broad knowledge and full understanding of what you’re doing with your guitar, you will not progress as a musician; instead, you will develop inconsistency and become complacent or frustrated with your state of musical stagnation.
